Inspired By Asia – Art Exhibition Of New Works

I have been lucky enough to spend the last few winters travelling throughout Asia and setting up a studio in Hong Kong.

I will be showing the first collection of paintings created there at my East Sussex Studio September 21 & 22.

Experiencing Asia is immersive and overwhelming. This collection of painting is a distillation and reflection of my adventures. There is so much beauty and life in texture and the details, decay and jewel like corners.

The challenge and exhilaration.

The complicated fragile heat soaked chaos and the rare oases of calm are endlessly inspiring.

Travelling through Asia is a dance with jarring notes and ragged edges, exhausting, stimulating, magical, mysterious and full of beauty.

I constantly take photographs but when I paint I do not attempt to copy, but rather to ‘capture the essence’ of this dynamic muse.

When in Hong Kong I am able to give in to my need to create and paint for days, I get up in the morning, I paint all day. I sleep for a while then paint some more.

The layers of work that create these miniatures is exciting. Textures that may have taken years to create are obliterated in seconds, in pursuit of a moment of ‘elation’ when I know the painting is complete. This moment is precious,  unique and rare, sunshine on purple skies.

I’ve loved working small again because recently a lot of my pieces have been huge. I’m aware that when paintings are too large they becomes physically out of reach and also financially out of reach for lots of people, and I don’t want that. This whole collection is made up of works that you can pick up and take home on the bus!
