Artist Biography – Jessica Zoob

“I look for hope and redemption by celebrating beauty in its various forms, be it in urban decay, a Hebridean storm, or a Butterfly’s wing.”

ABOUT JESSICA ZOOB & HER PAINTINGS

Jessica trained at Central School of Art and Nottingham University, during which time she travelled extensively. For seven years, she worked as a theatre designer at countless venues including the Bristol Old Vic, the Royal National Theatre and Greenwich Theatre. Since 2000, Jessica has worked exclusively as a British contemporary artist from her East Sussex studio. She exhibits regularly in and around London and has works in private collections worldwide.

“I work mainly with oil paint as it has exceptional properties: it gives colours solidity, lustre and depth, while its transparency makes wonderful glazes. I also use acrylic colour for its iridescence and metallic qualities, and its magical capacity to change or enhance overlying colours depending on the play of light on the picture, or the position of the viewer.  Many of the paintings are created by a process of building up and scraping back layers of paint. Pouring liquid glazes onto the canvas forces me to work with complete spontaneity.  I would probably describe my work as contemporary art or contemporary impressionism.”

RECENT COMMISSIONS INCLUDE WORKS FOR THE ENTRANCES OF, THE LANCASTER’S HYDE PARK, A PALACE IN DUBAI AND PAVILLION C, NEOBANKSIDE.

“I first encountered Jessica’s work when I interviewed her for the Sunday Times ‘Style’ magazine several years ago. I was quite simply blown away by her ability to translate raw emotion and energy onto the canvas, creating whole domains of colour and texture that touch a nerve deep inside our own psyche. Because her work is not constrained by obvious figurative or landscape content, the eye is free to explore the layers within and discover its own worlds – no wonder then that she is the artist of choice for many leading, international interior designers, as her paintings sit as happily in very simple, contemporary interiors as in the lavish and the opulent.” – Helen Chislett, Journalist & Author.

2015 Jessica had a solo show in Cape Town with Southern Guild and has been the featured contemporary artist at London Design Week in Chelsea Harbour, London. She has had major collections shown at Loughran Gallery, Motcomb Street, Rove Gallery in Hoxton Square, The Great Room 1508 London, NEOBankside, South Bank and Medici Gallery, Cork Street. She has created a range of award winning textiles called Desire in collaboration with Romo.

“Zoob’s use of line, texture and colour recall the work of Gerhard Richter’s abstract paintings and the poetic quality of Claude Monet’s later works. However, they are rich in imagination with an innate energy and beauty all of their own.” – Leonie Irvine, Medici Gallery
