Hygge is everywhere at the moment and I’m embracing it!

Hygge is a Danish term and Denmark is regularly voted one of the happiest countries in the world

A definition:

The art of building sanctuary and community, of inviting closeness and paying attention to what makes us feel open hearted and alive.

There are many similar definitions but this is the one I like the best. With the nights drawing in and the winter ahead of us I am determined to stay well, slow down, keep cosy and enjoy simple pleasures with friends and family. We live in such a busy, stressful world and I’ve had such a hectic year travelling, buying a new house, being a newly wed…all wonderful experiences but I’m ready to end 2016 slowly, cherish my loved ones, appreciate my surroundings and just be in the moment.

When you type ‘Hygge’ into Pinterest my 2014 New Resolutions pop up high on the list and is saved onto 559 Pinterest boards. How lovely that these words resonate with people and they share.

“We are social creatures, and the importance of this is clearly seen when one compares the satisfaction people feel in relationships with their overall satisfaction with life. The most important social relationships are close relationships in which you experience things together with others, and experience being understood; where you share thoughts and feelings, and both give and receive support. In one word: hygge.”
― Meik Wiking, The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well
